Lawn Fertilization and Weed Control

Nitrogen Lawn Fertilizer and Weed Control

The constant rain of April is giving way to the first wave of Crab Grass! This means it’s about time to start fertilizing your lawn! If you want greener grass in your lawn, a nitrogen based fertilizer is your first step. Total Lawn Care uses Nitrogen fertilizer because of it’s life-giving properties, as Nitrogen is a vital element in turf’s growth process. Too much Nitrogen fertilizer, however, can seep through groundwater and into Michigan’s waterways! This is why we recommend having a MDA Certified Spray Technician apply ANY chemicals or fertilizer to your lawn. Total Lawn Care Inc. is a Healthy Lawn Care Provider for Watershed Protection, and we care about our environment!

If you would like to meet with one of Turfgrass specialists to create a fertilizer plan that fits your lawn, call us at 248-588-1694 info@totallawncareinc.com, or Click Here to use our Online Request to schedule an appointment for a free estimate!

Landscape Design

Landscape is to a house what a picture frame is to a good painting. It is perfect for bringing out the best features of your property while hiding the rough edges. A house that doesn’t have good landscape design can look naked and as if it doesn’t belong. Another great thing about a designed landscape is the increased curb appeal – the International Society of Arboriculture has said that a landscaped house can be worth up to eighteen percent higher than its non landscaped neighbour.

The increased liveability of a house that has a landscape design is amazing – creating an outdoor living space can give you the extra room you and your family need. Not only does it look good but landscaping can provide a great deal of personal satisfaction, its when all the elements come together in a visually appealing way that you know for sure that you have achieved successful landscape design.

Lawn Aeration – Explained!

An Aeration is one of the best tools one can utilize when trying to obtain a Healthy Lawn. Core Aeration consists of making small holes in the lawn by either inserting small rods into it or by “coring”, or extracting a “plug” of soil and thatch out from the lawn. The following are just some of the benefits of performing a yearly lawn aeration:

Benefits of Lawn Aeration / Core Aeration

  • Oxygen can now easily reach the roots, allowing the grass to “breathe”, or let off gasses it produces
  • Fertilizers and Nutrients can now get easier access to the root system because of the available space
  • Water is now better able to permeate the soil, and reach the root system
  • The thatch is now broken up, allowing micro-organisms to come to the surface and feed on it, giving the turf more nutrients
  • The compacted soil surrounding the roots is now broken up, allowing new turf to grow, and giving you a fuller looking lawn

The benefits of core aeration are directly related to growing, and maintaining a  healthy lawn program. Many of our customers that take part in our own Fertilization can attest to the difference it makes. If you would like to find out more about aerations, or would like to schedule one, please call us at 248-588-1694, email us at info@totallawncareinc.com, or Click Here to use our Online Request!

Scale and Sooty Mold – Watch for it!

We have had a rather large presence of Scale and Sooty Mold affecting trees within the Oakland County area this spring. Stated simply, Scales are small insects that latch on to a tree limb, damaging the tree’s health and vigor. Once your tree has been affected with Scale, the best option is to apply a Horticulture Oil to the affected region. Scale and Sooty Mold on TreeA Horticulture Oil is  a product used to remove the infestation by suffocating the insect, and also by penetrating it’s outer protective layer to damage the  cells themselves. Where there is Scale, there is generally a presence of Sooty Mold. Sooty Mold is a fungus that feeds off of Honeydew secreted by the Scale. Scale Mold on TreeWhile Horticulture Oil is relatively harmless to most birds, animals, and humans, we still recommend a trained professional apply the application as incorrect usage can harm, and possibly kill the tree. If you think you may have Scale or Sooty Mold, please contact us to get a free estimate on a Horticulture application.
