When to Plant Perennials and Annuals!

Annual and Perennial Garden Flowers in Troy, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Bloomfield, and Rochester MIThinking about planting Annual and Perennial flowers this year? Middle to late Spring is the most opportune time to plant perennials and annuals in your garden. By planting them in mid to late Spring, you ensure that any late night frosts do not effect root growth, or plant health. You also ensure that the heat waves of summer do not effect the plant early in it’s growing cycle. Summer planting can also be very successful if proper watering is observed during the planting process.

Watering is crucial to newly planted annuals and perennials. Water the plants immediately, right after planting. Water a minimum of once a week for the first two weeks to keep plant roots moist and improve root vigor.

Garden PLants - Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, Bloomfield, Rochester Hills MIPerennial and Annual maintenance is fairly easy. Be sure to remove dead flowers as soon as possible to encourage new growth during spring and summer, prune off any dead tops in late winter, and apply insecticide as needed to control any pests as soon as noticed to help avoid spreading them to other plants.

Lawn Aeration – Explained!

An Aeration is one of the best tools one can utilize when trying to obtain a Healthy Lawn. Core Aeration consists of making small holes in the lawn by either inserting small rods into it or by “coring”, or extracting a “plug” of soil and thatch out from the lawn. The following are just some of the benefits of performing a yearly lawn aeration:

Benefits of Lawn Aeration / Core Aeration

  • Oxygen can now easily reach the roots, allowing the grass to “breathe”, or let off gasses it produces
  • Fertilizers and Nutrients can now get easier access to the root system because of the available space
  • Water is now better able to permeate the soil, and reach the root system
  • The thatch is now broken up, allowing micro-organisms to come to the surface and feed on it, giving the turf more nutrients
  • The compacted soil surrounding the roots is now broken up, allowing new turf to grow, and giving you a fuller looking lawn

The benefits of core aeration are directly related to growing, and maintaining a  healthy lawn program. Many of our customers that take part in our own Fertilization can attest to the difference it makes. Sprinkler Turn On Turn-On
We can even go a step further, and do a thorough water audit. Landscape irrigation auditing is a great tool for lowering your water bills, and maximizing water efficiency. A Sprinkler Audit consists of three main procedures: Initial Site Inspection, Water Measuring, and Irrigation Schedule Adjustment. Each procedure is designed to result in significant water savings, along with making sure the proper amount of irrigation is reaching each individual zone dependent on what type of plant material is getting irrigated. A water audit is performed by laying out catch devices (Often plastic cups are used.) in a grid like pattern throughout the irrigated area. The zone is then turned on, and allowed to run for generally 10 to 15 minutes. The time is recorded, and the water within each cup is measured and recorded. Next we figure out the precipitation rate at which that zone is running. We do this by taking the average amount of water in each cup divided by the number of of cups, multiplied by 60. This gives us a valid “Inches per Hour”, and allows us to see how effectively the system is running. Because different plant material require alternate watering than turf, knowing the Inches per Hour rate will let us know where we can turn down the zones watering to save on water, but still effectively irrigate the zone.

Soil Compacted? Get a free diagnosis!

Lawn Aeration needed for Compacted Soil in Birmingham MI Compacted soil creates an inhospitable environment for grass root development. While a layer of thatch is healthy for most yards, sometimes this layer becomes too dense for roots to develop properly. The effects of compaction include a decrease in drainage (permeability), water-holding capacity, and air movement within the soil. After extended periods of compaction, the conditions in poorly aerated soils can reduce mineral nutrient uptake which can impair the growth of tree and plant life. Professional companies use a “Core Aerator” to fix this issue. The core aeration removes plugs of soil, allowing more room for nutrient and gas exchange which can lead to a greener, healthier lawn. Not sure if you have compacted soil? Call us here at Total Lawn Care Inc. and we will send out one of our turf technicians to give you a free diagnosis!
