Scale and Sooty Mold – Watch for it!

We have had a rather large presence of Scale and Sooty Mold affecting trees within the Oakland County area this spring. Stated simply, Scales are small insects that latch on to a tree limb, damaging the tree’s health and vigor. Once your tree has been affected with Scale, the best option is to apply a Horticulture Oil to the affected region. Scale and Sooty Mold on TreeA Horticulture Oil is  a product used to remove the infestation by suffocating the insect, and also by penetrating it’s outer protective layer to damage the  cells themselves. Where there is Scale, there is generally a presence of Sooty Mold. Sooty Mold is a fungus that feeds off of Honeydew secreted by the Scale. Scale Mold on TreeWhile Horticulture Oil is relatively harmless to most birds, animals, and humans, we still recommend a trained professional apply the application as incorrect usage can harm, and possibly kill the tree. If you think you may have Scale or Sooty Mold, please contact us to get a free estimate on a Horticulture application. When to Plant Perennials and Annuals!

Annual and Perennial Garden Flowers in Troy, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Bloomfield, and Rochester MIThinking about planting Annual and Perennial flowers this year? Middle to late Spring is the most opportune time to plant perennials and annuals in your garden. By planting them in mid to late Spring, you ensure that any late night frosts do not effect root growth, or plant health. You also ensure that the heat waves of summer do not effect the plant early in it’s growing cycle. Summer planting can also be very successful if proper watering is observed during the planting process.

Watering is crucial to newly planted annuals and perennials. Water the plants immediately, right after planting. Water a minimum of once a week for the first two weeks to keep plant roots moist and improve root vigor.

Garden PLants - Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, Bloomfield, Rochester Hills MIPerennial and Annual maintenance is fairly easy. Be sure to remove dead flowers as soon as possible to encourage new growth during spring and summer, prune off any dead tops in late winter, and apply insecticide as needed to control any pests as soon as noticed to help avoid spreading them to other plants.

If you would like to have Perennials or Annuals installed in your garden, or would like to meet with one of our landscaping professionals to plan a landscaping design for your own yard, Call us at 248-588-1694 info@totallawncareinc.com, or Click Here to use our Online Request to schedule an appointment for a free!

Lawn Aeration – Explained!

An Aeration is one of the best tools one can utilize when trying to obtain a Healthy Lawn. Core Aeration consists of making small holes in the lawn by either inserting small rods into it or by “coring”, or extracting a “plug” of soil and thatch out from the lawn. The following are just some of the benefits of performing a yearly lawn aeration:

Benefits of Lawn Aeration / Core Aeration

  • Oxygen can now easily reach the roots, allowing the grass to “breathe”, or let off gasses it produces
  • Fertilizers and Nutrients can now get easier access to the root system because of the available space
  • Water is now better able to permeate the soil, and reach the root system
  • The thatch is now broken up, allowing micro-organisms to come to the surface and feed on it, giving the turf more nutrients
  • The compacted soil surrounding the roots is now broken up, allowing new turf to grow, and giving you a fuller looking lawn

The benefits of core aeration are directly related to growing, and maintaining a  healthy lawn program. Many of our customers that take part in our own Fertilization can attest to the difference it makes. Mulch, Compost, and Topsoil!

Mulch, Compost, Topsoil, and Landscaping Ideas for PlaygroundsMulch is one of the best tools a landscape designer has in his or her toolbox. Mulch can take a bland, or stale landscape, and give it a fresh new look. Although mulch is most often used in beds, it is also a great material to go around tree’s within a turf panel. By mulching just the right amount (Not so much that it puts pressure on the tree trunk!), you can create a professional edge, and a nice point of contrast within your yard.

Mulch also provides a great substitute for grass in areas that are too small, or otherwise unaccessible, such as around walkways. By surrounding your walkway with mulch you can create a low maintenance, yet very stylish landscape!Mulch & Compost for Brick Paver Walkways and other Landscaping Ideas

Mites and Miticides! Know what to do!

The recent HOT/DRY weather has promoted Mite activity on Evergreens, including Albertus Spruce, Colorado Spruce, Norway Spruce, Hemlocks, and Firs. Mite damage can often be seen when the needles start to look brown, or dusty in color. The solution: Spray before the population grows to minimize plant stress. We have had plenty of Mite activity in the Deciduous Trees and Shrubs this year, primarily Locusts, Amelanchiers, Crabs, Burning Bush, and Roses.
