Lawn Fertilization and Weed Control

Nitrogen Lawn Fertilizer and Weed Control

The constant rain of April is giving way to the first wave of Crab Grass! This means it’s about time to start fertilizing your lawn! If you want greener grass in your lawn, a nitrogen based fertilizer is your first step. Total Lawn Care uses Nitrogen fertilizer because of it’s life-giving properties, as Nitrogen is a vital element in turf’s growth process. Too much Nitrogen fertilizer, however, can seep through groundwater and into Michigan’s waterways! This is why we recommend having a MDA Certified Spray Technician apply ANY chemicals or fertilizer to your lawn. Total Lawn Care Inc. is a Healthy Lawn Care Provider for Watershed Protection, and we care about our environment!

If you would like to meet with one of Turfgrass specialists to create a fertilizer plan that fits your lawn, call us at 248-588-1694 info@totallawncareinc.com, or Click Here to use our Online Request to schedule an appointment for a free estimate!

Lawn Aeration – Explained!

An Aeration is one of the best tools one can utilize when trying to obtain a Healthy Lawn. Core Aeration consists of making small holes in the lawn by either inserting small rods into it or by “coring”, or extracting a “plug” of soil and thatch out from the lawn. The following are just some of the benefits of performing a yearly lawn aeration:

Benefits of Lawn Aeration / Core Aeration

  • Oxygen can now easily reach the roots, allowing the grass to “breathe”, or let off gasses it produces
  • Fertilizers and Nutrients can now get easier access to the root system because of the available space
  • Water is now better able to permeate the soil, and reach the root system
  • The thatch is now broken up, allowing micro-organisms to come to the surface and feed on it, giving the turf more nutrients
  • The compacted soil surrounding the roots is now broken up, allowing new turf to grow, and giving you a fuller looking lawn

The benefits of core aeration are directly related to growing, and maintaining a  healthy lawn program. Many of our customers that take part in our own Fertilization can attest to the difference it makes. Fertilize with a Healthy Lawn Care Provider!

When choosing the type of fertilizer you will be using, always choose “Earth Friendly”. Living in Michigan, we need to do everything we can to protect our waterways.

Landscape Care Program

A great way to do this is by following SOCWA’s Healthy Lawn Care Program for Watershed Protection. The program consists of several guidelines designed to help protect our waterways, while still keeping the nice lush lawn we all desire. Some of the guidelines include avoiding “Weed-and-Feed” combination products that add many unnecessary chemicals to our landscape. These “Blanket” applications often effect insects and other vegetation beyond the intended target, and are wasted. Looking for a Lawn Fertilization Company? Make sure they are a Healthy Lawn Care Provider like Total Lawn Care! Do your part, protect our waterways! Lawn Mowing

Lawn Mowing

Lawn mowing sounds extremely straightforward. However, lawn connoisseur knows the proper procedure of lawn mowing. Biggest miscue homeowners make cutting grass too short. Evenness of the cut provides lawn, a good look. Grass grows faster after it has been trimmed to regain its genetic form.

Second most issue is when to stop mowing. Lawn mowers maintain, never to remove more than one-third of blade length. Mowing means pruning. Severe cutbacks are more stressful for grass and require extra energy to heal. When grass grows faster in mid-spring, mowing is required twice a week.

You should not leave enormous piles of clippings of grass after mowing. This will mat down the leaving grass blades, which will discolor the grass and provoke diseases. Clippings in small piles need to be raked up. It is preferable if you compost it or use as mulch over garden beds.

Finally, many homeowners take the same route while mowing. This is because of convenience, habit or nosy neighbor. No horticultural problem will arise with that, but altering the route provides cosmetic difference.

Lawn mowing tips include mow high and often with sharp blades. Soon, you will become a master of mowing.
