Scale and Sooty Mold – Watch for it!

We have had a rather large presence of Scale and Sooty Mold affecting trees within the Oakland County area this spring. Stated simply, Scales are small insects that latch on to a tree limb, damaging the tree’s health and vigor. Once your tree has been affected with Scale, the best option is to apply a Horticulture Oil to the affected region. Scale and Sooty Mold on TreeA Horticulture Oil is  a product used to remove the infestation by suffocating the insect, and also by penetrating it’s outer protective layer to damage the  cells themselves. Where there is Scale, there is generally a presence of Sooty Mold. Sooty Mold is a fungus that feeds off of Honeydew secreted by the Scale. Scale Mold on TreeWhile Horticulture Oil is relatively harmless to most birds, animals, and humans, we still recommend a trained professional apply the application as incorrect usage can harm, and possibly kill the tree. If you think you may have Scale or Sooty Mold, please contact us to get a free estimate on a Horticulture application. Mulch, Compost, and Topsoil!

Mulch, Compost, Topsoil, and Landscaping Ideas for PlaygroundsMulch is one of the best tools a landscape designer has in his or her toolbox. Mulch can take a bland, or stale landscape, and give it a fresh new look. Although mulch is most often used in beds, it is also a great material to go around tree’s within a turf panel. By mulching just the right amount (Not so much that it puts pressure on the tree trunk!), you can create a professional edge, and a nice point of contrast within your yard.

Mulch also provides a great substitute for grass in areas that are too small, or otherwise unaccessible, such as around walkways. By surrounding your walkway with mulch you can create a low maintenance, yet very stylish landscape!Mulch & Compost for Brick Paver Walkways and other Landscaping Ideas

Soil Compacted? Get a free diagnosis!

Lawn Aeration needed for Compacted Soil in Birmingham MI Compacted soil creates an inhospitable environment for grass root development. While a layer of thatch is healthy for most yards, sometimes this layer becomes too dense for roots to develop properly. The effects of compaction include a decrease in drainage (permeability), water-holding capacity, and air movement within the soil. After extended periods of compaction, the conditions in poorly aerated soils can reduce mineral nutrient uptake which can impair the growth of tree and plant life. Professional companies use a “Core Aerator” to fix this issue. The core aeration removes plugs of soil, allowing more room for nutrient and gas exchange which can lead to a greener, healthier lawn. Not sure if you have compacted soil? Call us here at Total Lawn Care Inc. and we will send out one of our turf technicians to give you a free diagnosis! Mites and Miticides! Know what to do!

The recent HOT/DRY weather has promoted Mite activity on Evergreens, including Albertus Spruce, Colorado Spruce, Norway Spruce, Hemlocks, and Firs. Mite damage can often be seen when the needles start to look brown, or dusty in color. The solution: Spray before the population grows to minimize plant stress. We have had plenty of Mite activity in the Deciduous Trees and Shrubs this year, primarily Locusts, Amelanchiers, Crabs, Burning Bush, and Roses.
