Irrigation 2015

Sign up and get your irrigation system spring check up underway.  Total Lawn Care Inc. will turn on the water supply; check the irrigation clock controller for appropriate time settings per zone, set run times and days, check the vacuum breaker and run all zones to assure proper coverage.  All heads will be adjusted as needed to maximize water resources.  Irrigation sensors if installed will be checked.  If needed Total Lawn Care Inc. Irrigation Tech can install sensors to help conserve water and keep water bills down.  Any system repairs or upgrades can be approved and repaired on site in most cases.   There is a variety of new water conserving irrigation heads and drip line products that are available to upgrade the existing systems.  New system installations and zone area additions can be performed by Total lawn Care Inc.  Mid season site checks and irrigation audits can be scheduled to monitor your irrigation system.  Fall comes quick, schedule the irrigation shut down with your start up to make sure you have your irrigation system Winterized in time.  The irrigation shut down includes turning off the water supply and irrigation clock controller.  We use an air compressor to remove all moisture from the lines, vacuum breaker, valves and heads to assure no winter damage from freezing temperatures.  Schedule your irrigation services today.

Total Lawn Care’s 21st Season!

Updates as we prepare for our 21st season!

Lower fuel prices mean that there will be NO price increases to the services contracts and we will not apply fuel surcharges unless gas rises above $3.20/gal. We continue to explore viable, alternative fuel sources and new technologies to help keep prices down and lower fuel emissions.

Phase 2 of the landscape installation project at Mahle’s World Headquarters is complete and was awarded The Farmington Hills Beautification Award for the ‘creation of a beautiful place to work and live’.

We took in over 750 tons of compostable material and processed it into rich, fertile and repurposed compost, which was thereby diverted from our landfills.

We remain steadfastly committed to the promotion of The Healthy Lawn Care Program. See enclosed program details.

There are four MGIA/Professional Land Care Landscape Certified Technicians, one International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist and one Michigan Nursery and Landscape Certified Green Industry Professional on staff this season and we continue to promote furthering education, training and development for all of our team members.

Sprinkler Turn On and Water Audit

Not sure exactly what to do for your Sprinkler Turn On? Don’t worry, Total Lawn Care can help! During a Sprinkler Turn On, we check all sprinkler heads for proper coverage and proper working order.  We then set your clock for you, and make any recommendations you may want to impliment to better irrigate your landscaping.

We can even go a step further, and do a thorough water audit. Landscape irrigation auditing is a great tool for lowering your water bills, and maximizing water efficiency. A Sprinkler Audit consists of three main procedures: Initial Site Inspection, Water Measuring, and Irrigation Schedule Adjustment. Each procedure is designed to result in significant water savings, along with making sure the proper amount of irrigation is reaching each individual zone dependent on what type of plant material is getting irrigated. A water audit is performed by laying out catch devices (Often plastic cups are used.) in a grid like pattern throughout the irrigated area. The zone is then turned on, and allowed to run for generally 10 to 15 minutes. The time is recorded, and the water within each cup is measured and recorded. Next we figure out the precipitation rate at which that zone is running. We do this by taking the average amount of water in each cup divided by the number of of cups, multiplied by 60. This gives us a valid “Inches per Hour”, and allows us to see how effectively the system is running. Because different plant material require alternate watering than turf, knowing the Inches per Hour rate will let us know where we can turn down the zones watering to save on water, but still effectively irrigate the zone.

Sprinkler Winterization and Blowout: What we do!

Winterize your Sprinkler SystemCrack in Backflow Device from Freezing        With the cold weather approaching, it’s time to think about preparing your Sprinkler System for winter. At Total Lawn Care we offer complete sprinkler system maintenance and winterization services. From a broken sprinkler ran over by a vehicle to a break in your sprinkler line, we can fix it!

        It is important to Winterize your Sprinkler System to avoid costly damages done by water expansion during the cold months. When systems are not properly drained, the most common damage is a split copper or ball valve on the back flow preventer. This repair is costly due to the time it takes to replace the copper parts and re-attach them. Poly Pipe that is not winterized will become brittle from the cold and when the water expands it breaks easily. Sprinkler heads with water left in them will also break when the water witin them freezes and expands inside.

        At Total Lawn Care we treat every system with the time necessary to perform a thorough winterization. After the initial hook up with our air compressor, we blow out every zone twice untill only a fine mist of water is evident. Upon the second run through of the system, we will catch any trapped water left in the system. Upon completing the removal of 99% of the water, we will double check the water shut off valve to make sure there is no leakage of the shut off valve.
