Lawn Aeration – Explained!
An Aeration is one of the best tools one can utilize when trying to obtain a Healthy Lawn. Core Aeration consists of making small holes in the lawn by either inserting small rods into it or by “coring”, or extracting a “plug” of soil and thatch out from the lawn. The following are just some of the benefits of performing a yearly lawn aeration:

- Oxygen can now easily reach the roots, allowing the grass to “breathe”, or let off gasses it produces
- Fertilizers and Nutrients can now get easier access to the root system because of the available space
- Water is now better able to permeate the soil, and reach the root system
- The thatch is now broken up, allowing micro-organisms to come to the surface and feed on it, giving the turf more nutrients
- The compacted soil surrounding the roots is now broken up, allowing new turf to grow, and giving you a fuller looking lawn
The benefits of core aeration are directly related to growing, and maintaining a healthy lawn program. Many of our customers that take part in our own Fertilization can attest to the difference it makes. Compacted soil creates an inhospitable environment for grass root development. While a layer of thatch is healthy for most yards, sometimes this layer becomes too dense for roots to develop properly. The effects of compaction include a decrease in drainage (permeability), water-holding capacity, and air movement within the soil. After extended periods of compaction, the conditions in poorly aerated soils can reduce mineral nutrient uptake which can impair the growth of tree and plant life. Professional companies use a “Core Aerator” to fix this issue. The core aeration removes plugs of soil, allowing more room for nutrient and gas exchange which can lead to a greener, healthier lawn. Snow Mold Fungus is unfortunately a very common occurrence here in Michigan. Often times Snow Mold shows up as either a grey or pink patch in the area where large amounts of snow has melted. Edges of driveways and street curbs are the most common places Snow Mold shows up. Snow Mold is not always easy to diagnose. Some of the tell-tale signs are white areas of turf in which grass blades are dead, bleached, and clumped together. Even though the sight of Snow Mold is a cause for concern, it rarely causes permanent damage. Gray Snow Mold typically damages just the blades of grass, and can generally be combated by a light raking of the area and a spring application of fertilizer. Pink Snow Mold, on the other hand, can invade the roots and crowns of turf and cause more extensive damage to the grass.
